About Pixel Noir
Living on the streets of a shithole like Pinnacle City, there’s only two things to keep you going: A pack of cigarettes and the feeling that there’s more than this.
There was something rotten in that rundown place. You were in over your head, but you were too proud to admit it. It was your pride that killed your partner. With the hospital burned to a crisp and nothing to exonerate you, they threw you in jail.
For ten years you were haunted by unanswered questions and unspeakable horror, frightened by what you saw, what you did - and what you could still do. Now you’re scraping by as a private eye, running a business out of a crappy apartment. But a chance comes along to clear your name once and for all. With your sanity at stake, how can you afford not to take it?
Pixel Noir is a RPG-inspired detective game set against a film noir backdrop. Think Earthbound meets Sin City!
What’s special about Pixel Noir?
The game was pitched on kickstarter and to date has received 1,914 backers pledging $61,212. It has already been greenlit by the community https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=519401883
Pixel Noir’s art style has become popular and more relevant over the years with more and more developers using it and despite the common “16-bit” label, few games with pixel art aim to emulate a specific console or hardware era. (The recently released Shovel Knight and its meticulous recreation of NES technology is an outlier.) The art is instead used as a form of visual abstraction that can appeal to a wide variety of players.
Pixel Noir gets you to act like a real detective, in a sense that you need to explore rooms, areas in developing your character. Much like Midgar from Final Fantasy VII or Fourside from earthbound, there’s plenty to do and explore from the dark alleys to the questionable characters that always seem to be hanging around.
With a firm influence in the film noir genre with classic Japanese role playing games, the player inquisitiveness will determine the storyline and the other character’s motivations much like L.A Noire. The game’s “investigation mode” also takes inspiration from Batman Arkham Asylum and Tomb Raider with player mechanics from Super Mario RPG.
